Barbara R. Wulfers works to stop the ripple effect of illiteracy by promoting family literacy
MEDFORD, WI, March 25, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- teacher Barbara R. Wulfers has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in adult education.
With 30 years of professional experience, Ms. Wulfers specializes in GED preparation, adult education, and composition. As a teacher, she works to increase the writing, reading, and mathematics skills of non-graduate high school adults, prepare them for GED testing, provide technical and general education training, develop placement skills for readiness in college admissions and conduct college level classes in college success. She has human relations and business communications experience and previously worked with institutionalized prisoners at a male correctional facility. She became involved in her profession because she realized the overwhelming need for non-graduate high school students to complete their education and move on to job training or higher education. She is also aware that stopping the ripple effect of illiteracy begins with the education of adults and the promotion of family literacy.
Ms. Wulfers received a Master's Degree in General Education from Avila College in Kansas City, MO in 1982 and a Bachelor's Degree in Secondary Education from Southeast Missouri State University in 1979. She holds certification in adult education in the state of Wisconsin and is a Certified English Teacher and Certified Reading Teacher (K-12) in the state of Missouri. She served as chairperson of the Correctional Education Association in WI in 2009 and is a member of the Wisconsin and National Education Associations. For her work, she was honored with the Teacher Corps Award in 1980. She attributes her success to her passion for teaching and learning, tenacity, self-belief in unlimited possibilities, and her capacity to accept people at their level of ability. "When adult students walk into my classroom, I nurture each student's self-esteem and self-confidence to help him or her achieve more success than the student realized was possible," she explains. Looking ahead, Ms. Wulfers hopes to work with adults or at-risk students and obtain a doctorate. She would also like to continue her consulting services.
